MaGrann Associates welcomes Steven Paul, Anthony Rodriguez and Josh Schmalbach to the team as well as our newest Co-op, Yang Sun!

Steven is MaGrann's Outreach Representative for the Kentucky office. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from The Ohio State University. Steven enjoys movies, art and design and spending after-hours exploring the Louisville music scene.

Anthony joins MaGrann as a Technical Consultant. He was raised in Springfield, NJ and received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Montclair State Universiry. Anthony was a collegiate baseball player and became very passionate about golf after an injury. He has a handicap of 7.6! Anthony worked in sales to get through college and began his career as a sales representative.

Josh joins us as another Technical Consultant and will be working with the multi-family team. He has been in the energy and sustainability field for 8 years, working as a campus Energy Manager and consulting on projects like building automation for Homeland Security. Josh is a Harvard grad, with a Masters in Sustainability and Environmental Management. He has lived in New Jersey for most of his life, except for a period of time when he lived in far northern Wisconsin - where he had many adventures including being chased by a black bear and getting frost bite in -40 degree temperatures! In his free time, Josh enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife and 18 month old son.

Yang Sun is our more recent Drexel University Co-op student. Yang joins us as a junior, studying mechanical engineering. This is his third and final Co-op and he is currently working on eQuest modeling for Energy Star Multifamily Home projects at MaGrann. In his free time, Yand enjoys watching movies and basketball games and looks forward to attending a 76ers game this year.

The Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) held their 2014 Groundbreaker Awards on September 18th in Philadelphia. The event was created to honor those transformative people, organizations, and projects that are moving our market, impacting the region, and influencing others to do the same around the corner or around the world. Applications were submitted for sustainable sites, innovative new buildings, impressive community programs and more.

MaGrann Associates submitted an application on behalf of the Transit Oriented Development and green community, Paseo Verde, which is located by Temple University. Paseo Verde was developed by Jonathan Rose Companies and Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha (APM). The architect of the project was WallaceRoberts & Todd (WRT) and MaGrann Associates acted as the LEED and ENERGY STAR Consultant.

Paseo Verde was selected as one of the three winners at the Groundbreaker Awards, along with Shoemaker Green at the University of Pennsylvania and The Hamilton Family Children's Zoo & Faris Family Education Center: KidZooU at the Philadelphia Zoo. Congratulations to these groundbreaking projects!

RPM Development Group and New Jersey's City of Pleasantville Mayor Jesse L. Tweedle, Sr. hosted the Groundbreaking for the Pleasantville City Center project on September 30th. MaGrann's Rich Selverian and Ray Perkins were on hand for the program as MaGrann is providing the LEED MidRise and Energy Star Multi-family High Rise services for this two-phase, $38.7 million redevelopment initiative.

Located in the heart of Pleasantville's downtown, the project aims to transform an overgrown, underutilized lot on one of Pleasantville's primary mixed use areas. It will create 135 residential apartments and approximately 18,000 square feet of street-level retail space. Public transportation, medical facilities, public schools and shopping are all located within a half mile. The two buildings, Pleasantville Mixed-Income and Pleasantville Mixed-Use, are the first two phases of the multiphase Pleasantville City Center mixed income redevelopment project.

The Groundbreaking event included remarks from Anthony Marchetta, Executive Director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency which will be providing a mortgage for the project and Melissa Orsen, Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Funding will also be provided by Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, construction financing from Wells Fargo Bank and Community Development Block Grant Sandy relief funds.

September 21st marked an important day for climate change everywhere. While world leaders were assembling in New York City for a landmark summit on climate change, about 400,000 students, celebrities, organizations and concerned citizens took on the streets in a march, standing together and demanding action. The People's Climate March was a huge success. It received abundant press attention including a feature on the front page of The New York Times and was determined to be the largest climate march in history by far.

MaGrann's Technical Consultant, Jon Jensen attended the impressive event. "It was validating to see how many people showed up to express their concern about these issues. What inspired me about the day was the collective sense of excitement about the solutions. We have the answers and now is the time to decide as a society how we want to make the changes we need to pass forward a livable planet," he said.

World leaders gathered for the United Nations Climate Summit two days later to address the climate crisis. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited government, finance, business and civil society leaders to the Summit and had them present suggestions to reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience and mobilize political will for a legal and global agreement in 2015.
