The Gabber: Local Businesses Honored at Vinoy
Local businesses and non-profits were recognized at the eighth annual LocalShops 1 Community Awards on Sunday, August 14. The ceremony, held at Marchand's restaurant at the Vinoy Hotel in downtown St. Petersburg, had over 150 attendees representing businesses and organizations throughout the Bay area. Addressing the crowd, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman praised their contributions to the community and reiterated the city's support.
Founded in 2008, LocalShops 1 is a coalition of independent businesses throughout the Bay area. Every year, they celebrate their anniversary by honoring local businesses and non-profits.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman's proposed 2017 city budget addresses immediate challenges while investing in initiatives to improve and maintain quality of life as the city grows. This well-rounded proposal makes good use of a nearly $8 million bump generated by rising property values and includes a nominal reduction in the property tax rate. It also reflects the mayor's progressive agenda that promotes modest investments in small businesses, individuals and social programs that could make a long-term difference.

Tampa Bay Times: First Tee golfers from St. Petersburg earn a trip to Pebble Beach
Claire Vermette and Sadie Chlapowski have played golf throughout the state in junior golf tournaments and as members of the First Tee of St. Petersburg. Seldom have they had the chance to play outside of Florida.
"I played Pinehurst No. 6 (in North Carolina) a few weeks ago," said Vermette, a junior at Northeast High School.

The Weekly Challenger: The new CRA has hit the ground running
Last Friday, the City's media department released the good news that the new South St. Petersburg CRA (Community Redevelopment Area) had made its first official round of grants in what city and community leaders anticipate will be an annual grant cycle over the next 30 years.
It was a moment that had been years in the making. Seven years to be precise - from the time community leaders began to push for the CRA's creation in 2009 to the time the city council took its unanimous vote to approve the inaugural slate of 33 grants totaling $468,000 last Thursday.
